7-year-old girl “Please tell me the difference between a shrine and a temple.”

This is a letter from a seven-year-old girl who asked about the difference between a shrine and a temple. Osho Taigu was once interested in this question and mentioned that he had done research on the topic of “Religion and Sound” when he was a graduate student. Osho Taigu recalled that he had experienced the scary, tense and painful experiences of being scolded for mistakes by other monks at temple ceremonies since he was a child. He wondered why it was necessary to do such formal things. Why do we worship here?, why are we here to burn incense?, why do we ring the bell here? These meanings vary from region to region. He talks about the difference between a shrine and a temple, and about the bell without a lingering sound at a shrine and the bell with a lingering sound at a temple. He also explains the different offerings that are offered at a shrine and a temple. At a shrine, we offer radishes, carrots, etc, as they are, to God. While at a temple, we offer cooked food, such as steamed buns, to Buddha. The deities enshrined at shrines are Gods of nature, not human beings who are supposed to provide us with abundant natural blessings. A Shrine has teachings of gratitude for the blessings of nature. On the other hand, Buddhist is enshrined at a temple, and the principal objects of worship in Buddhist altars and temples are enshrined as human beings who once lived. A temple is a place to inherit and pass on the teachings how to let go of various sufferings and live a happy and peaceful life. In the end, Osho Taigu tells us that we should visit a shrine and a temple thinking that they have important teachings for our lives.
